<image:title>writing - artist profile: princess nokia - Written for B-Side Magazine (2017)</image:title>
<image:caption>Spring Weekend 2017: Princess Nokia Artist Profile by Yasmine Hassan It takes a special sort of artist to perform as one of Spring Weekend’s most anticipated acts, as well as share her thoughts on “spirituality, feminism, and race” in a sold-out Women’s History Series talk at the Sarah Doyle Women’s Center. But Destiny Frasqueri is just that sort of artist. Frasqueri has adopted a number of monikers over the course of her career. These days, she is best known under the guise of the high-energy, don’t-give-a-fuck persona Princess Nokia, but it is impossible to understand the thought and artistry behind Princess Nokia without first understanding her personal background and complex past. Destiny’s identity is a whirlwind of intersections and contradictions. A proud Afro-Nuyorican who spent her adolescence drifting between Spanish Harlem and the Lower East Side, she’s both self-proclaimed New York tough kid and classic Boricua shorty, unapologetically punk tomboy and traditional Caribbean woman--a person who fully embraces all of her hard and soft edges, and who is equally grounded in and inspired by her roots, her ideals, her favorite comic books, and the “cinematic landscapes” of her native New York. Having lost her mother to HIV/AIDS at the age of ten, she was forced to deal with an abusive household after becoming a product of the foster care system. Before running away to the Lower East Side at the age of sixteen, it was the surrounding queer communities who helped raise her; she became a “club kid,” go-go dancing, attending vogueing competitions, and wholly immersing herself in the local underground creative scene. This time spent in the Lower East Side, explains Frasqueri, is what catalyzed her career as Princess Nokia--and as a “legitimate” musician. Before the era of Princess Nokia, she was just Destiny, and subsequently, Wavy Spice, an artist who would infrequently post tracks on SoundCloud. Mostly, though, she would revel in the freedom of playing underground, “high-powered punk shows... performing, making people feel good, [and] singing songs that people [couldn’t] get online.” Her first track, “Destiny” (recorded 2010, released 2012), only gained modest popularity online, but it read like a prophecy. “I'm doing shit so legit it’s beyond you / My characteristic spit, I’ll admit it’s beyond you / My shit is X-Men, I'm a mutant you can’t see me / blowing up the masses like the invention of the TV” Shortly after, she would release a second track, titled “Bitch I’m Posh.” With its lush, metallic synth piano and backdrop of classic house percussion, as well as her “posh” voice spitting lines replete with QTPOC slang, the track clearly harkens to her roots in the queer club scene. Faced with the international recognition that followed, Frasqueri then felt the pressure to create a record in lieu of her usual, experimental approach to music. Soon followed tracks like “YAYA” (a dedication to her indigenous roots, its title meaning “Great Spirit” in Taino) and “Versace Hottie” (which serves Azealia Banks vibes, but without the mess that is Azealia Banks). Within a month of “Versace Hottie,” Frasqueri reimagined herself as “supernatural hood fairy” Princess Nokia. First came “Nokia”, a nod to “ghetto girls”, early 2000s butterfly-clips-and-glitter aesthetics, and Japanese pop culture. (Who else could get away with sampling Utada Hikaru’s “My Sanctuary” from Kingdom Hearts and singing “Konnichiwa / Me llamo Nokia / y me gusta Pokemon” in the same song?) Then was “Dragons,” a track inspired by her fascination with the relationship between Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo of Game of Thrones, but accompanied by a standalone video love story made of arcade game kisses and quotidian bedroom scenes. With the release of mixtapes ‘Metallic Butterfly’ and ‘Honeysuckle,’ as well as her first EP ‘1992’, her discography expanded to include irreverent, attitude-packed hits “TOMBOY” and “KITANA,” for which she has gained widespread notoriety. Of her most recent artistic transformation, Frasqueri says, “As Princess Nokia I can project the multi-dimensional aspects of myself that I could not express with the name Wavy Spice. I can venture into any realm of music or character of my choosing without confusion. I’m making worldly music that will talk to all kinds of people: Banjee girls in Harlem, teen brides in the Middle East, gay boys in East Asia. Labels no longer matter. My new music is cosmic and three dimensional, and it will really speak of who Princess Nokia is. Princess Nokia is sound. It is progression. It is all that I am.” But despite the commercial success of her records, her live shows cling tightly to the independent spirit and “New York flavor” that has shaped her. As the first set of the first Spring Weekend to actively prioritize female artists of color, she will certainly bring those street-smart vibes of progression and multi-dimensionality that she describes. Her live presence is distinct; it’s high energy and aggressive, but also deeply considerate, protective, and steeped in personal narrative. She rides the line between expressing her self-purportedly sweet, caring nature and her constructed identity of a tough, urban woman--her reputation for insistently bringing women and femme fans to the front of rowdy crowds only exemplifies this interplay. Though it’s unclear as to whether she’ll prioritize her newest tracks or her Wavy Spice sleeper hits, her set will certainly make for an unforgettable opening to an unforgettable weekend.</image:caption>

<image:title>writing - concert recap: downtown boys - Written for B-Side Magazine (2015)</image:title>
<image:caption>You Can’t Look Back on Downtown Boys’ Wave of History Concert Recap & Artist Profile by Yasmine Hassan It’s a brisk October evening on Empire Street. There’s a couple of people huddled outside 115 Empire Street with their fists shoved into their pockets, the smoke from their cigarettes curling upwards into the darkness. A handful of folks have meandered inside, past the restaurant and bar, and into AS220’s main stage space. Though this night seems sort of slow, it has yet to truly begin. Tonight, Providence-based punk rockers The Downtown Boys are here, and they’re taking over. It’s not every day that you hear the words "crisp intergalactic political punk” and “bilingual radical dance sax party” used to describe the same thing, but the Downtown Boys certainly fit the bill. As it turns out, their roots are just as mixed-up and far-reaching as their sound--in an interview with Paper, guitarist Joey DeFrancesco admits that the Downtown Boys’ origin story is a bit of a “piecemeal question”. The band members are from vastly different walks of life, but music, activism, and passion for the Providence community are all powerful common threads that bind together this brass-punk sextet. DeFrancesco actually had a brief stint with Internet notoriety before the band was conceived. A history major and workers’ rights organizer, he famously quit his room service job at the Renaissance Hotel in Providence on-camera, marching through accompanied by the hometown favorite What Cheer? Brigade, of which he was a member at the time. DeFrancesco, founding bassist Dan Schleifer, and drummer Norlan Olivo are actually all former Brigade members, which is where they met and got the idea to start the Downtown Boys. The other three original members of the radical sextet were all pulled from other spheres of DeFrancesco’s life--a Springsteen cover band from college, in the case of founding sax players Emmett Fitzgerald and Will Cioff. In their eyes, the politics and message of punk rock are not to be divorced from the music and culture. And tonight, they’ve brought along a sick trio of openers with them, each from different corners of the scene. A self-described “sick riff rock trio,” GNäRDS is the first act of the night, armed with a set of blisteringly brief songs--in the true nature of punk rock, of course. Characterized by urgent, insistent bass riffs, breakneck drumming, and reedy guitar melodies, their energy does a good job of warming up the sparse crowd for what is to come. The trio are expressive performers, to say the least. Drummer Jamie Buckmaster’s face is almost never at rest, alternating between expressions that walk the line between energetic and manic, and singer/guitarist Peter Camerato contorts his mouth and squeezes his eyes closed as he hammers out chords. Bassist Abdul Hamid Sherzai seems more composed, hardly phased by his pounding riffs (though at one point, he manages to headbang his glasses off). Clad nonuniformly in flannel, scuffed sneakers, and old t-shirts, they feel like a time machine back to the early 2000s in the best kind of way. These are the guys that you could see working record shops and comic book stores by day, writing gritty punk-rock riffs by night, touring in a shitty van, and playing tiny, brilliant, ten-person shows on a chilly autumn night like this one. Funeral Cone has the same punk spirit as GNäRDS but in a very different sense of the word. They are all grit and glitz and spikes and leather, with a sound that leans decidedly more hardcore. Despite the more intentionally-deconstructed feel, there’s no pretense or air of grandeur. In fact, they immediately establish a sense intimacy with the audience, setting up all of their equipment on the floor. And all at once, they’re there and they’re loud. It feels close, and raw, and delightfully weird, but not necessarily in-your-face. For most of the time, lead singer Mike Leslie is facing his bandmates... even when he’s shrieking at the top of his lungs and twirling a holographic ribbon around himself. Their energy is infectious, though, and they’re never closed-off. It feels like a personal interaction between the band members, the audience halfway between observing and participating. The room has been gradually filling up all night; slowly but surely, it has been packed with people of all sorts just in time for Shellshag, a two-piece punk outfit from Brooklyn. The band has been active for nearly fifteen years, and they’ve acquired a devoted following in that time. What stands out immediately is their unique stage props, despite the humble venue. In the time between their set and Funeral Cones’, they’ve managed to bring some sort of tower of speakers onstage. The DIY set-up is complete with two microphone stands, oriented so that guitarist John “Shellhead” Driver and percussionist Jennifer Shagawat (who, by the way, is wearing bells around her waist, arms, and legs) are facing each other the entire time. Needless to say, there is powerful dynamic and visible connection between the two of them. Their stripped-down, poppy-but-utilitarian sound is accompanied by incredible energy and passion for their songs, their listeners, and their band. They leave the stage completely drenched in sweat, and leave the crowd abuzz and alive. Though one may have thought that the crowd for Shellshag was as full and lively as the venue was going to get, that actually couldn’t be farther from the truth. A few members of the Downtown Boys (one of whom, the bandana-clad drummer, Norlan Olivo, was spotted doing pull-ups from the ceiling beams earlier in the night) mill about after Shellshag’s set, socializing and moving equipment. But they’re all so different from each other that to a first-time listener, it actually isn’t completely clear who the band members are until they pull away from their separate spheres of conversation and activity, and make their way onstage to begin soundcheck. Olivo is similarly entrenched in the Providence community, as a live-in artist at the AS220 Mercantile Block residential space. Having moved to the Downcity neighborhood from South Providence (and originally, the Bronx), he’s an alumnus of AS220’s Youth Program. Along with music, he’s heavily involved in the AS220 photo program, as well as New Urban Arts, a program for local high schoolers that touts itself as a space for “arts mentoring, creative practicing, community building, [and] world changing.” Schleifer actually teaches there, as well. The crowd seems a little younger and a little browner by the time frontwoman Victoria Ruiz climbs up onto the stage. The band itself certainly has more of an intentional sort of done-up “look” going on than some of the opening bands, be it for the sake of individualism, an artist’s sensibility, or simply the desire to take up as much space as possible. Olivo has pulled his red banana up over his face, á là las zapatistas of Mexico; guitarist Joey DeFrancesco’s lips are painted a punchy shade of red; Ruiz oozes futuristic cool, her bottom lids smoked out with blue eyeshadow. DeFrancesco and Ruiz were brought together through their shared experience working at the Renaissance and subsequent stints in labor organizing. Ruiz, interestingly enough, isn’t originally from this area--or even this side of the country. Raised by her mother and grandmother in a suburban Mexican-American household near San Jose, CA, she came out to the East Coast to study economics and architecture at Columbia. Since relocating to Providence, she’s spent time as a public defender and organizer, and was eventually invited to join the band by DeFrancesco after designing their logo… and screaming along in the crowd at some of their first few shows. Ruiz describes the band’s philosophy best in her own words in a conversation with The Media. “Our bands exist because we want to use music and create moments with people to inspire and motivate us all to confront issues of racism, classism, queer phobia, police brutality, capitalism, and masculinity in our community. All of our songs are in direct response to institutionalized injustices. Individually, we are all connected to various issues in our community… We are bilingual with the intention to speak to as many people as possible,” she adds, emphasizes the “political decision” the band has made by writing lyrics that alternate between Spanish and English. After an incredibly tight, methodical soundcheck (“Could we get more sax?” requests Ruiz “More of my vocals?”), the band wastes no time in getting things going. Why is it that we never have enough with just what’s inside of us? Today, today we must scream at the top of our lungs that we are brown, we are smart! That third thing is only fear, push it away! Ruiz begins with an ad-libbed version of the intro monologue of Monstro, their breakout hit; sax crescendos in the background, coupled with punchy chords from DeFrancesco. During the mic check, her speaking voice is noticeably youthful and, in a sense, rather girlish. Solely based on that, it might catch you off guard to hear that she’s 28-years-old. When she performs, it’s like an all-consuming transformation--she shrieks at the audience, and her voice strains from the intensity of her message and passion. Monstro que come los muertos / Monstro que tiene la culpa / Monstro que mames externo / Y te mato, monstro (Monster that eats the dead / Monster that is guilty / Monster that messes with me externally / And I kill you, monster) She’s angry, and fearless--and brown, and smart--and the crowd can’t get enough of it. When they play, they engage with the audience in a dialogue of sorts. They all visibly feed off of the crowd’s energy, Ruiz acting as a mouthpiece for the band; she alternates between English and Spanish, screaming about pain and change and revolution. Incredibly, they’re by no means blinded by their ferocity, and they don’t come off as distant or inaccessible when they’re speaking so intelligently and powerfully about societal injustices. They care deeply about their fans, too, particularly those who are perhaps most vulnerable. At one point, Ruiz addresses the moshers in the crowd, pointing out that’s it’s fine if “[they] want to push each other around,” but that some people also “want to be in the front without being pushed around.” She then invites at least a dozen people onto the stage; they obscure the view of the band themselves, but it’s obvious that the Downtown Boys find it more important that people can come to dance and be close without endangering themselves or feeling uncomfortable. They wanna make you sing and dance--but, as Ruiz points out during the show, “A veces, tienes que gritar y llorar” (“Sometimes, you have to shout and cry”) for what you believe in. Needless to say, the intensity of their values is what shines through the most. At heart, they’re crusaders against “the prison-industrial complex, racism, queerphobia, capitalism, fascism, [and] boredom” first, and artists second. After speaking grandly about futurism and outer space as a way to break free from systems of white supremacy, Ruiz circles back to speaking out against local injustices--namely, the recent police conflict and subsequent student protests in Pawtucket. The opening sax riff of “Wave Of History” blares as Ruiz regards the crowd. “This one goes out to Tolman High School.” (Author’s note: Catch The Downtown Boys at the New Urban Arts Benefit on November 20th.)</image:caption>

<image:title>writing - album review: HOME4THESUMMER - Written for B-Side Magazine (2015)</image:title>
<image:caption>Raps From Down the Rabbit Hole Album Review by Yasmine Hassan Who is Jahi Razzaq? Despite his enigmatic social media handle (@whoisjahi), it’s not too hard to spot Jahi around campus. Hailing from New York City, he’s a sharp-dressed guy equipped with an equally-sharp tongue and a perpetual air of laid-back chill. Between spoken word open mics and Brown Cypher guest appearances, he’s commanded a distinctive artistic presence since his freshman year, but lately, he’s been bubbling up even more on the College Hill music scene. This autumn alone, he’s opened at the Bodega Beats x DAP live show at the Spot Underground in October, and spit bars for Brown’s notoriously silly, sexy, funky supergroup, richard. Undeniably disarming cool vibes aside, he’s a pretty private person, but his latest EP, HOME4THESUMMER, is heavily steeped in personal experience. And as it turns out, it’s inspired by the kind of story that a lot of us can relate to. Obviously, he describes his intentions best himself. “I wanted to capture a moment in time. This project is about the experiences that come from leaving home to achieve your goals. With this comes trials and tribulations, love found and love lost, and somewhere along the way you mess around and find out you started knowing yourself. But the craziest feeling is going home, where you can finally see how much has actually changed since you’ve been gone. I am forever grateful that the people that love me are still there for me, and knowing that they’re proud of me is one of the proudest achievements that I can attain. Something I’m especially proud of today though, is what I now share with you, 3 songs, under 15 minutes, and the chronicle of the most formative season of my life.” Sonically, HOME4THESUMMER feels like a dim, smoky room, thick with the heady smell of incense. It is the kind of album that makes you just kind of sit and reflect--the kind of jams I know I’d want to listen to on a train home, thinking about life and love, catching flashes of my still reflection in the darkened windowpane. Romanticism aside, there is a lot to be said about each song individually. There are only three, but they each reflect distinctive elements of JAHI’s style. The first track (and the first stop on JAHI’s adventure, naturally) is Providence Station. It starts off slowly, with ambling piano phrases punctuated by old-school upright bass. Within a few bars, smoky saxophone riffs begin to lazily unwind across the track, overdubbed by mellow, reverb-heavy background vocals. The piano relaxes into a cohesive pocket groove as the sax continues to noodle… and all of a sudden, JAHI is there. When you hear him rhyme, the first word that comes to “ease,” referring to the unbelievable ease with which he spits complex lines, drops unorthodox vocabulary, and crafts double-take-inducing metaphors. Listening closely, his direct references to familiar places and experiences will pull more than a few heartstrings. It’s no secret that people tend to relate their lives to the music that they listen to, but it’s a completely different experience when music manages to relate itself directly to life. “It’s kind of funny how far from heaven Providence is,” he professes, and he isn’t wrong. Providence Station’s soundscape conjures up visions of walking on a nippy autumn day in a big city, leaves tumbling as the world quietly bustles by in the background. After a brief vocal interlude, the Internship continues with the same moody, smoky feel, but it marks a definite departure from the train station. Here, he clears his throat and immediately sheds his usual laid-back vocal stylings; everything is markedly darker and grittier, with a more aggressive beat and overall aesthetic. Having heard this first at the Bodega Beats show, I can say that it makes for an awesome live show. It could be because of the dark, aggressive vibe, but it also be the painfully relatable chorus--“I been out here grindin’, but I ain’t gettin’ no money.” As soon the secondtrack comes to a close, the dense groove of Rockaway Beach starts all at once, and JAHI is finally home. There’s a catch, though. “I been away for too long,” he admits, “And I won’t be home for too long”. The production on this song is probably the most impressive on the entire EP, complete with ad-libbed background vocals, quick-paced percussion, beautiful live instrumentation, and plot-driving sound clips. After the beginning section, he manages to convince you to go down to Rockaway with him. Just as with Providence Station, this track has a lot of visual power. The progression of time is audible; you’re being brought along for this trip, passing time on the beach until the sun sets. And then, the layers fall away, and the second section of the track is all ocean waves and violin and reverb and magic. Whether this was his intention or not, JAHI’s HOME4THESUMMER evokes really strong imagery; it feels personal, visual, and visceral, all at once. It offers three starkly different windows into time: before, during, and after his time spent under the Providence summer sun. For all of those reasons, I sort of wish it went on for longer. We get to see three disparate sides of JAHI as an artist, but more than anything, they make you want to see all of the shades and nuances that lie between. For me, this EP feels like a lot of different things--like missing home, like nostalgia for summer afternoons on John St., like late nights spent wandering the East Side. Most of all, though, it feels like getting a taste of something that only makes you crave a little bit more. It represents separate slices of an adventure that, because it feels like I’ve experienced my own parallel version, piques my curiosity to hear the cohesive, fleshed-out story arc. But these themes transcend the strange duality of the liberation/intense grind of that first summer on your own. Really, HOME4THESUMMER is about, well... just that: going home, and how we all change while we’re away, and how it feels to try and pick up where we left off, and the emotions that come with all of that. Now that summer has come and gone, and autumn is almost over, it’s hard to say where JAHI will go next. Wherever it may be, though, I doubt that I’m the only one who is eager to see what kind of stuff he has up his well-cuffed sleeves.</image:caption>
